“This is the first time Canada has hosted the Social Enterprise World Forum, and it is our goal to make this year’s event a watershed moment in the ever-growing social enterprise movement,” explained Dan Overall, TRICO Foundation’s Director of Innovation and Collaboration and the coordinator for SEWF 2013.

This special occasion has led to an historic collaboration. TRICO Charitable Foundation is partnering with the Social Enterprise Council of Canada, the MaRS Centre for Impact Investing, Social Innovation Generation, the Social Finance Forum and the Canadian Community Economic Development Network to make this THE social enterprise event in Canada.

The technical definition of a “social enterprise” is any organization or business that uses market-oriented production and sale of goods and/or services to pursue a public benefit mission. This covers many types of organizations – ranging from enterprising charities, non-profits and co-operatives to social purpose businesses, which are for-profit businesses designed to fulfill a social mission.

In essence, it’s about the power of markets to serve organizations that have a social purpose mission.

“Over the coming months, we will be announcing a number of local and international speakers who will empower, innovate and inspire delegates; providing them with the knowledge and tools to enhance their social and environmental impact”, said Overall.

Early bird registration runs until July 25.

“While SEWF 2013 will be many things to many people, there are really three key cross-currents” explained Overall. “A powerful idea – the notion of markets as a tool for social good; tackling big issues -  resolving the world’s most complex and confounding social challenges; with a very wide tent – all sectors devoted to enhancing social impact, from social enterprises to policy makers, private sector leaders, social good businesses, not-for profits, the public sector, philanthropists to entrepreneurs.”

SEWF 2013 will focus on six program tracks:

  1. Social Finance/Impact Investing
  2. Indigenous Social Enterprise
  3. Social Enterprise Skills Building
  4. Research and Public Policy
  5. Cross-Boundary Collaboration
  6. Social Innovation
